Stage 2 | Grow

Investment Management: Why Invest in Retirement?

To put your money to work FOR you by allowing it to compound over time. Under the right circumstances you may be able to live entirely off investments—that’s independence.

Seems Easy Enough, but What Now?

Growth alone isn’t enough. In retirement, your investments need to provide reliable income while keeping pace with inflation. That balance is what we design for you.

You figured out how to allocate your 401k or investment account and you even managed to get your account to grow. But maybe things have started to get more complex:

  • How do I know I am not paying unnecessary taxes?
  • How do I know I am not wasting money on fees and expenses?
  • How do I know when to sell something?
  • How should a significant life event change my strategy?
  • How do I know what to buy and when?
  • How do I keep from making emotional decisions based on the news story I just saw?
  • How do I know I’m not messing everything up?

Our Process

So What Does the Process Look Like?

Optimizing your investments to match your goals, minimize tax drag, serve your income needs and grow over time.

1

Step One

Initial Assessment

Determine which investments and strategies are appropriate depending on your financial situation, attitude toward market swings and account objectives.

2

Step Two

Identify Cash Flows

Match assets to retirement income needs and create temporal diversification across asset classes, individual securities and risks by matching liabilities into the future.

3

Step Three

Portfolio Construction

Create buckets for future expense needs and utilize a core-satellite approach to allocate towards longer term growth assets, ensuring every position in the portfolio has a job.

4

Step Four

Ongoing Management

Employ asset location and tax-loss harvesting, risk management strategies, trade decisions and periodic rebalancing for tax-efficient investing and withdrawals.

Investing is Simple, but not Easy

We have decades of experience managing portfolios for clients of all sizes and objectives.
Here’s how we can help.

Household Level Portfolios

We treat all of your investments as one large portfolio, allocating appropriate assets to specific account types and tax levels to achieve your objectives as efficiently as possible.

Professional Management

The best laid plan isn’t much use if it gets abandoned in times of turmoil. We provide an extra barrier between your assets and the trade button to help ensure you are making optimal, long-term decisions.

Ongoing Monitoring

Dynamic portfolios adjust to your situation and market conditions. Periodic rebalancing, managing contributions and distributions, risk management and making tactical allocation decisions to ensure your money is ready when you are.

Individual Investments

We use primarily individual securities to match liabilities and allocate satellite positions. Investment products, even low cost ones, add hidden fees and eliminate the ability to control risk (overpaying) at the micro level.

For standalone Investment Management Services we have a minimum annual fee of $2,500. Eligible accounts we can manage include assets in bank, taxable brokerage, IRAs, qualified plans from previous employers and many others.

We Invest With…

Long-term Orientation
Investment assets should be fully invested at all times, attempting to time market ups and downs doesn’t work

Tactical Allocation
But allow market and security valuations to influence allocations among satellite positions while maintaining a steady core

Tax-efficiency
Nominal & after-tax returns are very different. Strategies like asset location & tax-loss harvesting can greatly improve REAL returns

We Select Investments…

With Purpose
Each investment in the portfolio has a job to contribute to achieving the overall account objective, we aren’t collecting random stocks

To Match Liabilities
Investments should match or offset specific liabilities, risks or goals according to their respective time horizon

Emphasizing Valuation
The attractiveness of any investments is directly proportional to the price paid; risk is the permanent loss of capital, not volatility

Investment Management Fee Estimate

Include cash in checking or savings, taxable brokerage accounts (trusts, joint, individual, TOD, etc.), corporate accounts, IRAs (Traditional, Roth, SEP, SIMPLE), Solo 401k and 401k or 403b with a previous employer.

Don’t include your 401k/403b balance with current employer although we may be able to manage this as well.

How Do I Pay Fees?

Assets Under Management (AUM) Fees are debited directly from your investment accounts we manage, monthly—see the chart below for more details.
Asset Value Range (Low)Asset Value Range (High)Annual Minimum FeeBlended Fee %Effective Rate
$0.00$250,000.00$2,500.001.00%1.00%
$250,001.00$750,000.000.60%0.73%
$750,001.00$1,500,000.000.50%0.62%
$1,500,001.00$3,000,000.000.40%0.51%
$3,000,001.00$5,000,000.000.30%0.43%
$5,000,001.00$10,000,000.000.20%0.31%
$10,000,001.00$15,000,000.000.10%0.24%
$15,000,001.00-0.05%-

Effective rate is the total annual fee as a percentage of assets at the top of each range. Example: $3,000,000 = $250,000 × 1.00% ($2,500) + $500,000 × 0.60% ($3,000) + $750,000 × 0.50% ($3,750) + $1,500,000 × 0.40% ($6,000) = $15,250 (0.51%). Subject to a $2,500 annual minimum fee. Fees are negotiable. See our Form ADV Part 2A for full details.
